The Sri Lankan team is unimportant. It concerns Gunathilaka directly. The Australian authorities have accused him of a severe crime.
Whoa! How did he act?
In the early hours of Sunday (November 6), police arrived at the Sri Lankan team hotel in Sydney’s central business area and detained Gunathilaka on suspicion of sexual assault. The victim met the man after chatting with him via an online dating program for a number of days, according to a statement from the New South Wales Police cited by ESPNCricinfo, and it’s alleged that he subsequently sexually attacked her on the evening of Wednesday, November 2, 2022.
According to the statement, a 31-year-old man was detained at a hotel on Sussex Street in Sydney just before 1 am on Sunday, November 6, 2022, following a crime scene examination by specialized police, who were described in Australian media reports as detectives from the State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad and Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command.
Later, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) released a statement confirming the player’s identification as Gunathilaka. Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty was cited as saying, “They met for scheduled drinks, had dinner, and then returned to the woman’s home,” in a story on Fox Sports Australia. It was regrettable because the woman had taken all necessary precautions and had met in a public area.
What has transpired because of the arrest?
Gunathilaka was “brought to Sydney City Police Station and charged with four charges of sexual intercourse without consent,” the police statement claims. With the help of AVL, the Sri Lankan national was denied bail to appear in Parramatta Bail Court today.”

On October 16, the first day of the competition, he only participated in one game, which was against Namibia in Round 1. He was out on the opening pitch of the game, which Namibia won by 55 runs. subsequently sustained a hamstring injury and was unable to continue playing in the competition, but he stayed with the team.
According to Gunathilaka’s ESPNCricinfo biography, he is a “powerful square of the wicket, particularly on the off side” and a “poised, attacking left-handed opener.” He is a right-arm off-break bowler who, according to his biography, respects Sri Lankan icon Kumar Sangakkara. Since making his international debut in November 2015, Gunathilaka has played for Sri Lanka in eight Tests, 47 ODIs, and 46 T20Is.
